Uniform & Rank

The standard duty uniform for Starfleet personnel is a jumpsuit that is worn by all active field officers. The standard uniform comes in three layers: 1) the jumpsuit, 2) the undershirt, and 3) undergarments (a vest/top and underwear). The individual's rank is worn as either a sew-on patch (for enlisted crewmen) or as metal pips on the right shoulder. Black boots are also worn, and personnel can choose to wear a baseball-style cap with their ship's registry number on the front. The MACO uniform is similar, but in a camouflage pattern; it features a belt and the legs are tucked into the top of the more rugged boots. The undershirt is replaced with a simple brown crew-neck t-shirt. The neck of the MACO jumpsuit is also a lot looser and lower.
Starfleet Admirals wear a variation of the uniform based on a shirt and tie design, with rank stripes around the sleeve cuffs in addition to the white trim around their shoulder stripe. Admirals exclusively wear a red shoulder division marker. The female variant of the Admiral's uniform replaces the shirt with a blouse and removes the tie. Based on a similar, yet more formal design, Starfleet officers are provided with dress uniforms for formal functions. The officer's rank is worn on both shoulders as well as in the form of stripes on their sleeve cuff, and the undershirt is replaced with a modern high-neck white shirt. The collar of the jumpsuit is replaced with a lapel design. Similar to flag officers, the division stripe also receives a white lining.
Starfleet field officers are provided with a thick field jacket for use in landing parties when visiting a location where it is slightly colder than comfortable, or when there are adverse weather conditions such as rain.
The standard Starfleet Extra-Vehicular Activity spacesuit is for use in zero-g environments or when there is not enough oxygen available to sustain its wearer. The undergarment is a body-fitting jumpsuit with no pockets constructed of a grey material designed to keep the wearer warm. It has a fabric belt with a plastic clip, on which can be attached holsters for equipment required, such as phase pistols. The MACO EVA suit is similar to the Starfleet one, but it is silver in colour and designed to allow the wearer much more ease of movement in order to accommodate combat situations. The MACO undershirt is a dark red.
Starfleet has a number of variant uniforms designed to help landing parties to deal with different environments. From left to right: Desert uniform designed to keep the officer cool in extremely warm climates (with and without outer jacket), thermal garments designed to keep the wearer warm without adding too much bulk to their attire, and arctic gear, designed to keep the wearer warm when entering extreme cold climates. This uniform has multiple layers which can be added and removed as needed.
Starfleet's rank structure is an evolution of the rank structure of former space agencies such as NASA, amalgamated with a few ranks of Earth's navies. It is a far more simplified rank structure than that used by the MACOs, which is a direct evolution of military ranks of United Earth governments.
