Post subject: | Forum to Nova Conversion |
All, I have today finished putting our IC posts from the forums into a copy of the database for our main site, and will shortly be making the changes on the server to update the local site I have been working on for our conversion from Forums to Nova. I've put the main site into maintenance mode until this is done - but I'll post again here (and put a news item through the Nova site) letting you know when it is done and when we can start using the site to update posts. All of our posts to date have been put into the system (most do not have titles, so are just listed as the post number that they are, and I have also added our JPs in progress - let me know if any of you have any issues seeing or editing those you are part of once the revamped site goes up. The forums will remain as our OOC communication venue, but the main site will become the home of our IC posting. |

I have now completed the restoration of our Nova site (previously used just as the front-end and for information display) back into a site that can be used for posting. It has also been upgraded to the latest version of Nova, since I had let it get quite a few versions behind since it was previously working as a simple CMS site. All of our posts to date have been put into the site, including those that are currently a work-in-progress. There may be further updates to come to the site as we bed in to being a play-by-Nova sim, but for now, I am pleased to say that we can get started again. If anyone has any issues logging in, first of all try the forgotten password feature (I appreciate it may have been quite some time since you last logged in to the Nova part of the site; for most of you probably not since you applied), and then any issues after that, please let me know. |

Just another quick update on the conversion work; Rather than the old method of viewing the forums as having them in an iframe (which would have worked great except seamless iframes aren't supported yet, so you have to define a set amount of space for the frame to take up and make it have scrollbars), I've changed the forums link on the site to on that goes to what used to be the 'forums as a standalone site' link that was at the bottom of the old page. I've also modified the forums skin so that it now includes the Nova header and footer and looks more seamless than it did before (the forum links for logging in/out and so on now pull their styles from the Nova sub navigation class). I have gotten it to change whether it displays the Nova control panel and log out (as opposed to log in) links as well, but I can't make the forums able to decide if you're logged into Nova or not - so what I've done instead, is assumed that if you're logged into the forums, you're logged into Nova, and that's what the skin uses to make its decision as to which links to show you. We do have a few forum members who have signed up over time who aren't crew members and so wouldn't be logged into the Nova site, but if you click one of those links when not logged in on Nova, you'd just get an error. I've also set the mission posting and joint posts forums as locked, since we'll be doing those posts on the Nova site now. Eventually (probably at the end of our current mission) I'll hide them from view, since they'll no longer be relevant. The main reason I'm keeping them there for now is for the first post in the mission thread that outlines the details of the mission, and also just in case I missed any JPs or anything while I was doing the conversion. |
