Pre-Starfleet
Starfleet Career Oatha La Fontaine (AKA "Oh") was born in Lafayette, LA in the early ages of Starfleet's mission. She was inspired as a little girl with field trips to Luna, and her big sisters family migration to Mars under the government grants for settlers. O has always wanted to go to space but suffered from a keenly unscientific mind, often unable to hack the mathematics and science needed for service or qualifications.
O attended a state level university, receiving a degree in culinary bio-chemistry, which carried a dual certification in molecular gastronomy. Her talents lay to the ability to balance spices to create precise effects, after tastes, blended flavours. O found easy work as a chef in Kitchens all over Louisiana, even cooking for a young Nicholas Joseph Sisko in New Orleans, though she found his temperament a match for her own and the two parted under less than friendly terms.
She was married to a wonderful man, Julius La Jeune, and had a son, Tybald La Jeune. Julius was able to secure a charter for their dreams of interstellar trade. Having purchased an outdated Lunar module L-Class freighter, they spent five years of idyllic life on the "Railleuse Moineau" before a fatal error claimed the lives of several crew, Julius included.
Tybald resumed the freighter runs as a Second Mate to Julius's best friend and former Second Mate, his career was looking strong. O found herself adrift and attempted to take her own life in the depths of a lonesome winter. Only last minute regret forced her to call for help after consuming a lethal dose of medicine.
Tybald resigned from his post in 2154 to care for O, posted his resume to Starfleet after the Xindi incident drummed up the recruitment drive.

Romance-Oatha will likely never recover from Julius dying on the "Railleuse Moineau." The Core had suffered a collapse from unknwon spatial properties (centuries later the Enterprise would encounter a quantum filament) The only solution to make the ship able to move away from the damaging space was to manually activate impulse through physically connections inside the engine room.
Mercy would be a quick action to save the day and a heroic death. Julius and two others made the connections and impulse was restored, at a fatal cost. They were irradiated beyond hope. Death came over days of agony, Oatha spent every moment with Julius until he was blinded by the degradations to his body. unable to hear or speak anymore, she felt herself lose the ability to love for having been hurt so bad.
The only family she has is her son Tybald, the spitting image of his father.
Friendships- Tybald, Orran Gilders (Julius former XO "Railleuse Moineau")
Sample- "Tybald... honey can you hear me? Oh honey..."
The comm was unresponsive, the only lights were the UV and light irradiation to decontaminate their skin. The slick sheen of the de-con gel always made her feel tacky and sticky, not to mention drying her skin out to the point she would peel. These were minor concerns comparatively, but the small stuff stuck with you sometimes.
It was after the second loss of power she truly began to worry. A life spent in kitchens and galleys across the spectrum and she was accustomed to lights flickering and turbulence. This was different, it felt... sharper and more definite. O was not prone to flights of fear or fancy but this was a terrifying moment for anyone. Despite her best efforts, images of Julius, the rasp in his voice as he lay dying, proclaiming his love for their son, for her... all of it was cascading through his thoughts.
Another jolt, followed by two quick ones prompted her to get to her feet and shout for anyone to respond. The comms were silent, her shouts rebounding off the empty room walls. She was trapped, alone, desperate but the panic didn't overwhelm her. Age and a lifetime of tribulations had galvanized her instincts to a toughened husk, she would be ready to fight if only she were given the chance.
Time dragged forever, but only one more jolt happened. There were hums and thrums, but she didn't know what the phase canons sounded like, or of hull plating being re-polarized after a strike. She listened to everything, but had no idea what to make of it.
"Mom?! Are you okay?"
O heard her sons voice, the deep set voice so like his fathers. Oatha danced a jig for a split second as she ran to the decon room door, seeing him stand there.
"Tybald dear, I am so happy to see you. What is going on?"
"Just a first contact made by criminals of their world. We sent them running but the captain isn't satisfied to leave it at that."
"Oh I dare say she can't. If it's first contact best to display strength." She wished she weren't speaking to him through a porthole.
"you okay mom? i know we lost power for a bit. Doc says you're good to go in an hour."
O smiled and held her hand to the glass, "I am fine, you go back to piloting, cant let the ship go rogue."
Tybald smiled, placing his hand onthe glass as well. "I'll see you soon, love you mom!"
O signed it back and watched him run back down the hall towards the command deck. reclining back on the bunk, she watched the cieling absent mindedly her thoughts taking her to happy times.
"Love you more..." she said to nobody in particular, and she smiled.
