I’m glad this section exists because Maya’s write up is a first draft, a work in progress. I’ve been planning to change aspects of it from the beginning.
First things first. How does Maya end up on the Discovery in the first place? From what I’m reading about the first mission it looks like Maya was added at the last minute rather than intended to join from the start. That’s okay with me, it’s the way Phlox and T’pol joined and Maya is basically a combination of the two. Since the Discovery is leaving early, the ship’s doctor assigned to the ship may be unavailable and Maya may have been added at the last minute. This will require a JP where Curtis or Gardener invites Doctor Maya to join the crew. Perhaps the bad guys have a biological weapon that Maya has developed a treatment for during her time at Cold Station 13.

I hadn't planned on them having a biological weapon - I figure with how soon we are after the Terra Prime episode, if they had that sort of weapon that could take out alien species but not humans, Paxton would have probably used that instead of the verteron array. I figure that with the current state of Terra Prime without a single agreed leader, their resources would be a lot less, and this would be a pretty standard dirty bomb. The bio weapon angle is a good one to perhaps follow up in a later mission though... once Terra Prime have consolidated some, they would probably look to up their game and go a bit more sophisticated.
As for Maya coming aboard - I figured that by the time I wrote the post between Curtis and Gardner, Curtis wouldn't have come to a decision about a medical officer yet. Could probably put it down to there still being relatively few doctors with experience of some of the things we're likely to come up against out in space. Perhaps Gardner (or Archer, over the comm. It's a small enough fleet that I reckon the only four captains of warp five ships would talk to each other) could suggest that Curtis look to bring someone on from the interspecies exchange program? Then Curtis could head down to HQ (or wherever Maya would be) to meet her and sound her out about coming aboard?

Agreed. Perhaps the ship's doctor that was originally going to be assigned is unavailable for some reason for extra 'we're sending you out before you're ready' drama.
Maya doesn't have to be serving with Starfleet at this time but she has served aboard a (Vulcan) ship in the past and she stayed on Earth to help during the Xindi crisis, both selling points for bringing her aboard. Doctor Phlox might recommend her if you're looking for cameos from Enterprise cast members. (Doesn't that always happen in the first six episodes of spinoffs?)
Update: I've hammered out the details of Maya's recent history. I'm assuming that when the Xindi attacked Earth in 2153 Maya offered her services to Earth' Starfleet where she trained prospective ship's doctors in interstellar medicine before leaving to teach at Johns Hopkins. She has informed Starfleet that her services are available should they be needed and often lectures at Starfleet bases.
I'm now picturing Sam Gardener informing Curtis that the officer scheduled to be the ship's doctor is unavailable but the physician who trained him during the Xindi crisis has volunteered to serve Starfleet if needed. I'm ready to begin the JP whenever you are.

Actually, and realistically Maya could have been on planet until the very moment needed on board. There is any amount of training and assignments in the military. Afterall, they wouldn't want someone of such caliber to be bored and go unused. Something will come up to keep her busy until it's time to go.

BTW, Maya you look either like T'Pol's mother, or, possibly Enya.
Now I won't people to go to sickbay without Watermark or Orinoco Flow going thru my head. And I (Anziano) end up in the hospital every time I (the writer) gets bored.

Yes, you got me. Doctor Maya's face is none other than Eithne Ní Bhraonáin, AKA Enya Brennan. We can assume that Enya is not only Maya's face, but also her singing voice. Just assume any song she sings where she sings in a foreign language you don't understand is in Vulcan. Tell me she doesn't look like a Vulcan in this still.

Now that Maya is finally aboard, does anybody want to meet the Discovery's resident quirky alien?

I'd be up for a post. Shall Chloe come by sickbay for her physical, or do you have something else in mind?

Ditto for Leo. I'm always up for a joint post; even if lately I haven't been as active as I'd like to be.
